HYDRO 2016 – Travel
This Website is for the IFHS Hydro conference 2016. The next conference will take place 30 October – 02 November 2018 in Sidney, Australia. Please see www.hydro18.ahs.asn.au for details.
You can travel to Rostock-Warnemünde by car, train, bus, ferry or plane. The conference venue is located on the opposite river bank, so the last step is to take a small ferry crossing the river (see map below). On this page we put together some information how to reach Rostock-Warnemünde by various means of transportation.
Travel by Plane: Airports
The nearest airport is Rostock-Laage (RLG) and there are some larger airports (Hamburg HAM, Berlin-Tegel TXL, Berlin-Schönefeld SXF) within about 250km distance from the conference venue (see also map on the right). Please find below some travel information from/to HYDRO 2016 using one of these airports. From airports RLG, HAM and TXL we can provide a transfer to/from the conference venue, see details below. |

Shuttle Service: Airport Transfer to/from Conference Venue
From airports RLG, HAM and TXL we can provide a transfer to/from the conference venue. You will be met at the airport by a professional driver or host, which means no waiting for a taxi in line. It's your choice to join a private or accompanied transfer by a comfortable limousine, van or mini-coach to the hotel. During the ride through the lovely countryside towards Rostock-Warnemünde your driver or host will provide you with information about Germany.
Just let us know your flight details and that you are interested in a transfer (shared with other guests arriving at a similar time) and we will inform you about the possible transfer options.

Airport Rostock-Laage (RLG)
Airport Rostock-Laage (RLG, distance about 50km) has regular flights from/to Munich (MUC) and Stuttgart (STR). There are also flights (mainly charter) to several destinations in Spain, Turkey and Egypt.

Transfer from Airport RLG to Rostock
- Shuttle Service: Please see information and prices given above.
- Bus: There is a local bus (#127, ticket about 10€, time table for November not yet available) operated matching all departures and arrivals. This bus takes you to Transfer to Rostock Central Bus Station (ZOB) which is located in the city centre near the Railway Main Station. From here you can take the city train ("S-Bahn") to Rostock-Warnemünde and then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below).
- Taxi: A taxi ride to the conference venue takes about 45 minutes. You may also go to the ferry terminal in Rostock-Warnemünde (about 40 minutes drive) and then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below).
Airport Hamburg (HAM)
Hamburg Airport (HAM, distance about 200km) connects to all major airports worldwide. If you cannot fly directly to Rostock-Laage, you should prefer Hamburg airport over the Berlin airports. Hamburg offers better connections to Rostock.
Transfer from Airport Hamburg to Rostock
- Shuttle Service: Please see information and prices given above.
- Train: There are urban trains to Hamburg main stations operating every 10 minutes. From there you can get trains to Rostock Main Station operated by Deutsche Bahn. From Rostock Main Station you can take the city train ("S-Bahn") to Rostock-Warnemünde and then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below). There are fast connections (total journey airport to Warnemünde about 3 hours) every two hours for about 45 Euros.
- Rental Car: Cars can be rented from sevaral companies (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, ...) located in Terminal 2. Follow signs to Highway A1, direction Lübeck/Putgarten. From A1 switch to A20 direction Rostock. Leave A20 at junction "Rostock-West" and follow the road to Warnemünde. See also instructions in the car section below. Total distance to the conference venue is about 200km and the journey takes about 2.5 hours.
Airport Berlin Tegel (TXL)
Airport Berlin Tegel (TXL, distance about 230km) connects to all major airports worldwide. If you fly via Berlin, you should prefer this airport.
Transfer from Airport Berlin Tegel to Rostock
- Shuttle Service: Please see information and prices given above.
- Train: Trains to Rostock Main Station are operated by Deutsche Bahn from Berlin Main Station. There are regional trains going from the airport to Berlin Main Station. From Rostock Main Station you can take the city train ("S-Bahn") to Rostock-Warnemünde and then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below). There are fast connections (total journey airport to Warnemünde about 3.5 hours) every two hours for about 45 Euros.
- Rental Car: Cars can be rented from sevaral companies (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, ...). Follow signs to Highway A111, direction Hamburg. Follow A111, A10 and A24 direction Hamburg. Switch to A19 direction Rostock. See also instructions in the car section below. Total distance to the conference venue is about 230km and the drive takes about 2.5 hours.
Airport Berlin Schönefeld (SXF)
Airport Berlin Schönefeld (SXF, distance about 260km) connects to all major airports worldwide. If you fly via Berlin, you should prefer Airport Tegel which offers better connections to Rostock.
Transfer from Airport Berlin Schönefeld to Rostock
- Train: Trains to Rostock Main Station are operated by Deutsche Bahn from Berlin Main Station. There are regional trains going from the airport to Berlin main station. From Rostock Main Station you can take the city train ("S-Bahn") to Rostock-Warnemünde and then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below). There are fast connections (total journey airport to Warnemünde about 4 hours) every two hours for about 50 Euros.
- Bus: Long-distance coaches start at car park P3, directly in front of Terminal B. Flixbus is operating a service from this airport to Rostock central bus station (ZOB). From there you can walk to Rostock Main Station (5 minutes) and take the city train ("S-Bahn") to Rostock-Warnemünde. Then walk to the conference hotel (take the ferry to "Hohe Düne", see below).
- Rental Car: Cars can be rented from sevaral companies (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, ...). Follow A10 and A24 direction Hamburg. Switch to A19 direction Rostock. See also instructions in the car section below. Total distance to the conference venue is about 300km and the drive takes about 3 hours.
- Airport Shuttle Service: If there are several delegates arriving about the same time we can organize a transfer to the HYDRO 2016 venue, so please contact us if this is of interest.

There are a lot of trains to Rostock Main Station, operated by Deutsche Bahn. For local transport to Rostock-Warnemünde see below.
Bus / Long-distance coaches
Long-distance coaches to Rostock city (Main Station / ZOB; for local transport see below) and Rostock-Warnemünde are operated by MeinFernbus / Flixbus and Postbus from various German and other European cities.
Car
| There are motorways to Hamburg (A20 / A1), Lübeck (A20), Berlin (A19) and Szczecin/Poland (A20); see also map on the right. From motorway A20 there is a direct connection to Rostock-Warnemünde (A20, exit 14 "Rostock West"; follow B103). |

Local transport from Main Station / ZOB to the Conference Venue
From Rostock Main Station / ZOB you can go to Rostock-Warnemünde by city train ("S-Bahn") or taxi (about 30 minutes drive). From Warnemünde train station there is a short foot walk to the ferry that takes you across the river to the conference venue "Yachthafenresidenz Hohe Düne". Total walking distance is about 1 km and takes 15–20 minutes.
Between 05:00 and 23:00 the ferry goes every 20 minutes, at night there is at least one crossing per hour. A ticket costs EUR 1.40 per person.
