HYDRO 2016 Social Programme
This Website is for the IFHS Hydro conference 2016. The next conference will take place 30 October – 02 November 2018 in Sidney, Australia. Please see www.hydro18.ahs.asn.au for details.
In the tradition of HYDRO conferences, HYDRO 2016 offered exhibitors, delegates and their partners an unmissable programme of social events in the evenings of the conference as well as guided tours for accompanying persons.
Guided Tours
For accompanying persons and/or delegates planning to extend their stay in Rostock we can suggest the following tours which will be available before, during and after the conference days, Sunday to Sunday. Note, tour 5 is available Thursday afternoon only. Please use our contact form to indicate your interest and give tour number, preferred date and number of persons. Tour 1: Hanseatic Rostock and its beer (~4 hours)
This tour introduces guests to their port of call as well as the everyday life and traditions in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. All sights will be covered during a walking section.
Enjoy a short transfer through the outskirts of Rostock in the wee hours of the morning. Upon arrival at the Rostock city center, follow your guide along the old city wall passing by the Kropelin Gate – one of Rostocks fortifications – ending up in the gardens of the Holy Cross Monastery.
Continuing on, admire the university building at the university square. Founded in 1419 the University of Rostock is the oldest institution for higher education in the Baltics. View the Blucher Monument and the Fountain of Joy of Life before you will be given some free-time to stroll around the city center or browse for souvenirs. Countless bars and cafes invite you to indulge maritime snacks.
The next highlight will be a visit to the awe-inspiring St. Mary's Church with its astronomical clock dating back to the 13th century. Learn more about the moving history of St. Mary's during a short transfer to a lively microbrewery close to the city center.
The "Trotzenburg" invites you to savour a fresh draft of homemade beer served together with a pretzel. With plenty of daylight left for the afternoon activities, we will head back to your hotel by ship afterwards.

Tour 2: Panoramic Tour Hamburg (~8 hours)
Your tour will start with a comfortable two hours bus ride from your hotel to Hamburg accompanied by a host/hostess who will provide you with information about Germany and the places you will visit during the day.
The "free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg" is Germany's second-largest metropolis and one of Europe's biggest ports. Elegant and cosmopolitan Hamburg is now a city of palatial office buildings, magnificent promenades, international musicals and extravagant shopping malls and the famous Reeperbahn (red-light district) in St Pauli.
Your panoramic drive through Hamburg will show you the most famous sites of this bustling city, as the Town Hall for a photo stop and Germany's oldest Stock Exchange. Pass through the Speicherstadt which is the century-old warehouse quarter, built in Gothic redbrick architecture (right next to the newest part of town), as well as the Jungfernstieg, one of the elegant and luxury shopping areas. Your tour will also pass by the inner Alster Lake. Drive past the St Pauli Landungsbruecken, where the old sailing vessels used to dock and continue your journey along the world famous Reeperbahn, nowadays not only red-light district, but entertainment area in many ways. Watch for the St Nikolai War Memorial Church and one of the flak bunkers (anti-aircraft artillery bunker), built during the World War II to provide air shelter for up to 18,000 people. Drive to St Michael's Church, which was destroyed a number of times in the past, but then always reconstructed. This church is the largest North-German Baroque church and is Hamburg's main landmark. Enjoy a photo stop, also having the chance to have a look at an early form of widow housing.
After you've experienced Hamburg's Top attractions, your coach will bring you back to your hotel.

Tour 3: Baltic Pearls – Lübeck & Wismar (~8 hours)
Exploring two members of the Hanseatic League, rich in culture and also UNESCO World Heritage sites will make your day a memorable experience.
During the 90 minute drive along the autobahn your local tour guide will familiarize you with your port of call, whilst you get to rest your feet and take in the dreamy countryside and villages of Mecklenburg. Upon arrival in Lübeck, follow your tour guide past the city's landmarks. You will notice very soon, that this city has much more to offer than just its acclaimed almond paste. Snap a shot of the city's southern city gate, also known as the Holstentor, which was part of Lübeck's fortifications until its own weight caused the tower to start sinking into the ground.
Afterwards, follow your guide through the old town, where you will see again many poignant symbols such as the St. Mary's Church, the Schiffergesellschaft building, a convention hall for the local sailors since the 13th century, where lunch will be served, the Holy Ghost Hospice as well as the Niederegger Shop, where you may indulge your sweet tooth during the 45 minute free-time for shopping. The visit to Lübeck concludes with a photo opportunity at the Jakobi Church before you will re-board your coach and head to Wismar.
Sit back and relax during the 45 minute ride towards the Hanseatic city of Wismar. Originally a Swedish town, the influence has shaped the city's architecture and culture throughout the centuries and you will have the chance to see Swedish history coming alive when walking over the Market square. Admire the Art of Water, a wrought-iron fountain, and view the town hall as well as typical Swedish buildings and maritime warehouses before returning to the hotel.

Tour 4: Essential Berlin (~12 hours)
Your day begins with a ride on the autobahn. It is a lengthy ride but one that is filled with many stories about Berlin and Germany and your guide knows them all. Along with the stories, she will answer your questions and also ask some of you to make sure the most important places are part of your itinerary.
As you enter the city, you will first find the district of Charlottenburg, the heart of the western city. You will stop in front of Schloss Charlottenburg, the palace of splendor which was the petite summer residence of Sophie-Charlotte, wife of Elector Friedrich III. Though the outside is impressive, the interior is less so and your photo stop will be your remembrance of this "home" of royalty.
We will travel into the city to take a short walk to four important symbols, all from different eras. We see the Reichstag, the seat of the Bundestag, the German parliament, and the contrast of the renovation to the original building. Just to the south is the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of division during the Cold War, it now epitomises German reunification. A block from here is the Holocaust Memorial, the memorial to the Jewish victims of the WWII Nazi regimen. It is striking in its simplicity. From here it is a short walk to Potsdamer Platz, Berlin's showcase of urban renewal. The contrast of architecture is apparent; here we facilitate your free-time and your guide will help you purchase your lunch.
We reboard our vehicle and drive down Unter den Linden, Berlin's most splendid boulevard, and then pass by Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin's most splendid square before we continue the tour to the Western part of Berlin.
We will have just enough time to make a quick visit to the KaDeWe Department Store, the biggest on the continent, where the East Berliners flocked when the wall came down.
